By age
Speech at 18 months
At 18 months most children use some single words and understand far more. The gap between understanding and speaking is normal at this age.
Words are not the only measure
Pointing, showing you things and following simple instructions all count.
What is worth a check
No words at all, no pointing, or a child who does not respond to their name.
An assessment is not a commitment
It gives you a measurement instead of an opinion. You can still decide to wait afterwards.
