Helping a speech delay at home

If you are on a waiting list, these weeks are not wasted. Here is where to put your effort.

Face to face, at their level

Get down so your child can see your mouth.

Follow their interest

Talk about whatever your child is already looking at.

Do not test

Avoid "What is this? Say ball." Comment instead: "A ball. A big ball."

Keep a record

Note new words with the date. You will want that list at the assessment.

This page gives general information only. It is not a diagnosis. For your own child, see a registered speech-language therapist or a doctor.
